Werner Preining, CPP, is the 2011 recipient of the Roy N. Bordes Council Member Award of Excellence. For the first time, the recipient was the joint nominee of two ASIS council chairs: Shayne Bates, CPP, on behalf of the Information Technology Security Council, and Jim Leflar, CPP, representing the Crisis Management and Business Continuity Council.

In their joint nomination, the two chairs underscored that Preining's "longstanding record of outstanding achievement in more than one council is by itself an extraordinary accomplishment." They point out that Preining has been a consistent contributor to almost every major activity of both councils and has given numerous hours to mentoring others.

Both chairs believe Preining is a deserving recipient for many reasons. An international member, Preining is based in Austria. Nonetheless, he consistently participates in council calls, webinars, and activities, many of which happen at odd hours during his day.

As a multilingual member, Preining brings a unique perspective to discussions and collaborations because he can articulate, present, and convey concepts and ideas to a broader audience. He significantly contributes to all major council activities, including reaching out to other members, researching and developing white papers, and contributing to educational efforts.

Since 2000, Preining has served at least seven years on each council. He has also served on the ASIS Disaster Management Council and has held leadership roles in his chapter and certification initiatives. He has been a frequent speaker at ASIS educational programmes in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

This award included complimentary registration, transportation, and accommodations for Preining while he was in Orlando. The award is named for Roy N. Bordes, a member of ASIS for more than 30 years. He served on and led numerous ASIS councils, was sought after as a frequent speaker and mentor, and was a revered member of the security community until his death in 2008.
