 Emile Hokayem, Senior Fellow for Middle East Security of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (Bahrain), will be a keynote speaker at the ASIS 3rd Middle East Security Conference & Exhibition that will be held in Dubai, UAE on 19-21 February 2012.
Mr. Hokayem is the Senior Fellow for Regional Security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies based out of the Middle East office in Manama, Bahrain. His expertise includes Iran-Gulf strategic, political and economic relations, regional security in the Gulf and the Middle East, US policy in the Middle East, Levant security (Syria-Lebanon/Hezbollah-Israel), role of external actors in the Middle East.
Prior to joining the Institute, he was the Political Editor and international affairs columnist of the Abu Dhabi-
based English-language newspaper The National.
From 2004 to 2008, he served as a resident fellow with the Henry L. Stimson Center's Southwest Asia/Gulf program in Washington DC, researching strategic, security and political issues in the Gulf and the Levant.
Mr. Hokayem has written extensively on Iran-GCC relations, regional security in the Gulf and Levant security. He has testified in front of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Syria and Lebanon and spoken on Gulf affairs in front of various government and non-government audiences.
Mr. Hokayem earned his Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, where he focused on international security, US foreign policy and the Middle East. He also served as editor-in-chief of the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, the school's academic publication. He has worked as an independent consultant on Middle East issues, including political and economic affairs. He holds degrees in economics and finance from the University of Paris-Dauphine. He is fluent in English, French and Arabic.
As a keynote speaker, Mr. Hokayem will discuss the drivers and directions of strategic change in the Middle East. Talking on his presentation Mr. Hokayem said: "2011 was a year of profound change for the Middle East: change in its political culture and change in its political order. Combined with already volatile and complex regional dynamics (sectarianism, proliferation, terrorism), those systemic transformations have security and strategic implications that have started but will take years to unfold."
The ASIS 3rd Middle East Security Conference & Exhibition will cover a wide range of security issues in 33 high-level educational sessions divided over 3 parallel tracks.
